Gold-medal-winning gymnast Aly Raisman is proof that OCD doesn’t define your worth or limit what you can accomplish. She’s a champion, a survivor, and an outspoken advocate for mental health and abuse awareness—and now she’s using her platform to destigmatize OCD and share her journey. In the latest episode of our podcast “Get to know OCD,” Aly joins Dr. Patrick McGrath, NOCD’s Chief Clinical Officer, to talk about how OCD intertwined with her athletic career and her desire to normalize mental health conversations so others feel less alone. Aly is an inspiration for anyone seeking strength in the face of OCD or other mental health struggles, and we’re incredibly grateful for her honesty and openness. 📺Watch our full interview with Aly Raisman on our YouTube channel! | Gold-medal-winning gymnast Aly Raisman is proof that OCD doesn’t define your worth or limit what you can accomplish. Doing talk therapy can actually make your OCD symptoms WORSE ⬇️ I remember going to a NON specialized OCD/ERP therapist after a breakup over 2 years ago and when I started working on my OCD with her, she gave me completely wrong information. I have been so lucky to be extremely educated on OCD therapy with the amount I've had to do over the last 7 years (5 at that point). I knew immediately she was unqualified to help with making my symptoms better. YOU CANNOT TREAT OCD LIKE ANY OTHER ANXIETY DISORDER - it's not even classified as an anxiety disorder anymore Why should you NOT just do talk therapy for OCD? ⬇️ It could: 🧠Encourage Rumination: Discussing thoughts deeply can intensify obsessive thinking. Validate Obsessions: Non-specialized therapists might unintentionally affirm obsessions, increasing their power. 🧠Lack Structured Tools: Talk therapy often provides insight but not strategies to manage compulsions (mine suggested doing a COMPULSION to cancel out another compulsion ❌) 🧠Enable Reassurance-Seeking: Therapy can become a form of compulsion if clients seek repeated reassurance. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy is often more effective since it directly addresses the cycle of obsessions and compulsions. Obviously OCD therapists can be hard to find which is why I work with NOCD 🫶🏻 NOCD trains all their therapists in ERP therapy, the gold standard for OCD treatment.
